Volvo IT is expanding in China and a national competition among IT students helped attract top-talent university students. Three of them will now join the mission as Volvo IT crew members at the next Volvo Ocean race stop in Sanya, China. They will soon show if they have what it takes to work with IT at the extreme.

Olle Högblom, 50, has been appointed President of Volvo IT. Olle Högblom is currently Senior Vice President Infrastructure & Operations at Volvo IT in Gothenburg, Sweden. The appointment is effective immediately.

The agreement with ICA AB means that Volvo IT will take over the mainframe operation of ICA’s logistics system and those parts of the ICA Bank that are run on mainframes. Operations will be transferred from ICA’s previous supplier of mainframe operations. The target is that everything will be transferred to Volvo IT during the autumn of 2012.

Volvo IT's web and mobile service for environmentally friendly commuting, Commute Greener, has been named the 2011 most environmentally friendly project by the CIO Magazine in Sweden.

Have you ever been in a rush to get to work and your car won’t start? No problem. A new web and mobile service function, Commute Greener, now provides information on others in your area who travel the same route. In addition, the application can also send a ride share request to allow you to quickly make other travel arrangements. The service can also help find cycling buddies or the times of the best bus service.

Volvo IT is currently collaborating with Volvo Trucks to test the way consumer electronics can be used to streamline work at service workshops. Mechanics are given access to service instructions from a smartphone, thereby saving time and enhancing quality.

An innovative approach by the Mexico City authorities made it possible for employees to change their commuting pattern and reduce their carbon footprint by up to 40%. Using Commute Greener, a web and mobile phone solution from Volvo IT, it is possible to significantly reduce congestion, lower CO2 emissions and create savings in terms of health, fuel costs and the environment. Five large organisations in the Mexico City administration were the first to use Commute Greener in Mexico. The authorities in Mexico City have now earned the first certificate of achievement given in the Americas.

Volvo IT has been selected as Official IT supplier for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race, which starts from Alicante, Spain, in October next year. Volvo IT will provide the IT platform, ensuring effective communications at each of the ten cities, which the race will visit during the course of the event.

In only 10 weeks, employees of the City of Gothenburg have succeeded in reducing their carbon emissions through changes in their commuting habits using Commute Greener, a new mobile phone and web application from Volvo IT. One of the groups actually succeeded in reducing its carbon emissions by as much as two thirds. To date, 9,900 zero-emission kilometers have been registered – a distance corresponding to 235 marathons.
