Seven IT mega trends – Smart Machines

by Volvo IT

Can machines think?

Volvo IT’s global skill center for future IT areas, Tech Watch & Business Innovation department, has identified seven mega trends that will have impact on Volvo’s business within a 5 to 10 years period. Smart Machines is presented as the fifth one in a series of articles.

With smart machines we mean the combination of autonomous robots such as Asimo and Big Dog and smart software such as IBM’s Watson.  They are all based on Artificial Intelligence in order to make decisions or assist us in decision making. The development within this area has lately been astonishing. It will be more disruptive than any of the prior technology generations. This is certainly an area that has moved from Science Fiction to reality.
Smart machines will do what we thought only people could do, machines couldn't do or neither people nor machines could do.

These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans, in dangerous or manufacturing processes, or simply just resemble humans. Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, development and application of robots and computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing.

The answer to the question “Can machines think?” we dare to say yes.

A study has started at Volvo in order to find out more about Smart Machines and its impact on Volvo. We expect to find areas for prototyping and other future activities.
